To improve the specification of stratospheric horizontal temperature and geopotential height fields from satellite radiation data, needed for high flying aircraft, a technique was derived to estimate data between satellite tracks using interpolated IRIS 15-micron data from Nimbus III. The interpolation is based on the observed gradients of the MRIR 15-micron radiances between subsatellite tracks. The technique was verified with radiosonde data taken within 6 hours of the satellite data. The...

Induction plasma heating techniques were studied for calcining zinc orthotitanate particles for use in thermal control coatings. Previous studies indicated that the optimum calcining temperature is between 1400 and 1750 C. An intermediate temperature (1670 C) was chosen as a reference point for running a temperature series at the reference point and 220 C on both sides. The effect of varying chamber temperature on the reflectance spectra, before and after vacuum UV irradiation, is presented....

Following impact, vapor expansion creates an intense airblast that interacts with the ambient atmosphere. The resulting hemi-spherical shock wave leaves a signature on the surface that is dependent on initial atmospheric and surface conditions. Here we propose that the formation of pedestal craters (craters surrounded by an erosion-resistant pedestal) may be a direct consequence of extreme winds and elevated temperatures generated by such an impact-induced atmospheric blast. Pedestal craters,...

THE NEED FOR MAXIMUM SIMPLIFICATION OF INFORMATION DEVICES, OF MEASURING, COMPUTING, AND CONTROL SYSTEMS, AND OF CONJUGATION UNITS IS POINTED OUT. EVALUATION OF THE INFORMATION CONTENT OF PROBLEMS AND OF THE INFORMATION CAPACITY OF UNITS IS PROPOSED. THE CONCEPT OF AN INFORMATION USE FACTOR FOR DEVICES IS INTRODUCED. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE MEAN INFORMATION USE FACTOR FOR ELEMENTS IN INFORMATION DEVICES IS EXTREMELY LOW, VARYING FROM 10 TO THE MINUS 15TH POWER (FOR DIGITAL COMPUTERS) TO .01 (FOR...

Plant and certain animal embryos appear to be responsive to the gravity vector during early stages of development. The convection of particle sedimentation as the basis for the sensing of gravity is investigated using the cells of wheat seedlings, amphibian embryos, and mammals. Exploration of the mammalian cell for sedimenting particles reveals that their existence is unlikely, especially in the presence of a network of microtubules and microfilaments considered to be responsible for...

A detailed summary of the diverse encapsulation materials and techniques that evolved to meet the cost goals of the Flat-plate Solar Array (FSA) Project is presented. A typical solar cell now consists of low iron glass, two layers of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) polymers, a porous space, primers/adhesives, a back cover of Tedlar, and a gasket/seal for a volume cost of 1.30/sq ft. This compares well with the project goal of 1.40/sq ft.

Methods are presented for calculating design limit loads compatible with probabilistic structural design criteria. The approach is based on the concept that the desired limit load, defined as the largest load occuring in a mission, is a random variable having a specific probability distribution which may be determined from extreme-value theory. The design limit load, defined as a particular value of this random limit load, is the value conventionally used in structural design. Methods are...

Results of an analytical study investigating the application of capillary pumping to the heat rejection loop of an advanced Rankine cycle power conversion system are presented. The feasibility of the concept of capillary pumping as an alternate to electromagnetic pumping is analytically demonstrated. Capillary pumping is shown to provide a potential for weight and electrical power saving and reliability through the use of redundant systems. A screen wick pump design with arterial feed lines was...

By substituting several components to bio-based, more biodegradable, and less toxic ingredients, anti-icing fluids (AAFs) that are more environmentally friendly were achieved. Development of these fluids focused on the replacement of alkylphenol ethoxylate (APE) surfactants that are toxic, replacement of triazole corrosion inhibitors which are toxic and non-biodegradable, and replacement of non-biodegradable anti-precipitant. All three newly developed AAFs are free of APE surfactants and...

This paper discusses NASTRAN structural analysis of the Sub-Scale Beryllium Mirror Demonstrator (SBMD), which has been developed by Ball Aerospace as an experimental design concept for the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST). The mirror was repeatedly subjected to 35 K environment in the large cryogenic test chamber at Marshall Space Flight Center. Deformations on the mirror surface were measured optically. The surface distortions predicted by NASTRAN are analyzed optically for comparison...

This environment has not only attracted people and increased payrolls, but has also created a broader base for the local economy. The activity of the center was a catalyst to private enterprise and has led to sizeable residential and commercial developments. Adequate treatment of domestic and industrial waste water was maintained. A feasibility study is now being conducted to establish a plan for a coordinated, centerwide plan for advanced treatment of domestic and industrial waste water.

Exchange of DMS and OCS between the surface of Sphagnum peatlands and the atmosphere were measured with dynamic (S-free sweep air) and static enclosures. Conversely, data from the static method indicated that OCS was consumed from the atmosphere. Short and long-term impacts of increased S deposition on fluxes of...
