Schreiber has published results obtained by heating cylinder and compressor oils in a specially designed air-bath, to a high temperature, in an atmosphere of air, CO/sub 2/ or steam. The duration of these tests varied from 16 to 24 hours and the temperature from 200 degrees to 280 degrees C. The percentages of asphaltic material in the oil, before and after heating were determined; these showed that a great increase had occurred in the presence of air and Cd, but not when the heating took place...

Accurate determinations of the heat of combustion of a solid may be made by means of a calorimetric bomb of one of the several recognised types. In order to make it possible for different laboratories to express results of calorimetric determinations on a uniform and comparable basis, it was deemed desirable to determine accurately the heats of combustion of some chosen substances which can be reproduced with the requisite degree of purity, and which can be used for calibrating the various...

Measurements of the thermal expansion of alpha and of beta brass in compositions such as Muntz metal, naval brass, etc., which normally are in equilibrium are given. Fundamental variations in behaviour as regards thermal expansion at temperatures up to 600 degrees C. were noted, due to the transformation in the beta constituent. Manufacturers of brass never quench 60:40 brasses, and data are given which show the ill effects of quenching. It is found that naval brass and manganese bronze which...

A nonlinear generalization of the Adaptive Model Theory, nAMT, is compared with human open-loop tracking data across the same range of conditions. The resulting simulations produced effects that mirrored the closed- and open-loop characteristics of the experimental response trajectories. This supports the use of an internal feedback loop for the inversion of external systems in the nAMT model. Other control-systems models (both AMT and feedback-error learning) were unable to reproduce the...

This study aimed to find evidence for the formation of an internal inverse model of a novel visuomotor relationship for feedforward control in the brain. An experiment was carried out involving 20 normal adult subjects who performed a pursuit random tracking task with a steering wheel for input. During learning, the response cursor was periodically blanked, removing all feedback about the external system (i.e., about the relationship between hand motion and response cursor motion). Results...

We fabricated side-gated quantum-dot structures on a GaAs/AlGaAs single heterostructure and measured their magnetoresistance at low temperature. We observed that oscillations appear almost periodic in B for a lower magnetic field region. We find that the oscillation period is fairly independent of the structure width. The experimental magnetoconductance are compared with numerical results.

The theoretical and numerical analyses carried out with reference to finite light beams in anisotropic dielectrics enable us to deal with narrow beams in the non-paraxial approximation, both in the linear and in the nonlinear regimes, detailing roles and contributions of the uniaxial response, the induced non-locality, the asymmetry introduced by non-negligible longitudinal field components and the second derivatives in propagation. The detailed analysis of reorientational nematic liquid...

It is considered that the pitch(f(sub 0)) is produced in auditory centers when we hear a complex tone of f(sub 1) = n f(sub 0), and = f (sub 2)(n+1) f(sub 0). f(sub 0) is known as missing fundamental. By a cochlea model we try to make clear the mechanism how missing fundamental is generated. The following signal is applied to the cochlea model. a(sub 1)sin(2 delta f(sub l)+a(sub 2)sin(2 delta f(sub 2 t). We make an aggregated autocorreleogram of output pulse trains from a cochlea model. We...

In this paper we present a new algorithm to detect abrupt changes in a signal when there is no a priori knowledge of the hypotheses on the process to be detected. This algorithm is based on the CUSUM algorithm. It can be applied in case of frequency and energy changes. This algorithm works when the samples are dependant and autoregressive modeling is needed. It is used to distinguish EMG segments from noise segments.

Automatic Machine Vision involves humans building machines capable of recognizing objects and scenes in digital images without further human assistance. Machine vision is a bottleneck in robotics and automated systems. When human programmers construct vision systems they are usually designed so that the program architecture and the data are optimized for the particular problem and classification technique being used. In general machine vision systems are hand-crafted to give the best results...

However, how it performs in a cellular phone based wireless environment for telemedicine applications is not known. In this paper, a joint design for SPIHT-based ECG data compression method over a next-generation mobile telecardiology testbed based on the 3G cellular phone standard is proposed and the performance of the testbed for the compressed ECG data segments selected...

In this paper, we propose a novel vector quantizer (VQ) in the wavelet domain for the compression of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. A vector called tree vector is formed first in a novel structure, where wavelet transformed (WT) coefficients in the vector are arranged in the order of a hierarchical tree. Then, the tree vectors extracted from various WT subbands are collected in one single codebook. Finally, a distortion-constrained codebook replenishment mechanism is incorporated into the VQ,...

One of the world's two global satellite navigation systems, GPS, is already fully operational (April 1994) and the other, GLONASS, will become operational by the end of 1995 or early 1996. Each will offer, independently of the other, precise location and time transfer continuously anywhere in the world and indeed in space itself. Many potential users, in particular the civil aviation community, are keenly interested in a joint GPS/GLONASS operation since it would offer substantial advantages in...

With the deterioration of radar operation environment and the enhancement of menace to radar, the task of radar targets detection becomes more complicated. Such as the detection of airplane, ship or cruise missile in over the horizon radar (OTHR), and the detection of the moving targets in synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Several higher-order vector elements - specifically hierarchal linear tangential/quadratic normal (LT/QN) - are compared, and the extensions required to incorporate LT/QN elements in the formulation are presented. The improved accuracy afforded by LT/QN elements compared to constant tangential/linear normal (CT/LN) elements is investigated by considering...

The theoretical study presented in this report has been triggered by some experimental findings indicating a negative temperature ionization coefficient, that is a breakdown voltage decreasing with temperature. Traditionally, semiconductors display a positive temperature coefficient, that is the breakdown bias increases with temperature. This is a signature of the intrinsic stability of a device, as under high bias operation, the internal heating of a device immediately translate into an...

We have applied out drift-diffusion simulation to a 6H-SiC We have first looked at the influence of temperature on device performance, in particular concerning the degree of ionization of the deep levels present in the semiconductor. We have detected large variations in the ionization rate by going when the temperature goes from 300 to 800 K. The different behavior of acceptors and donors causes the diode depletion region to grow more rapidly on the n side than on the p one. The peak field...

The University of Leeds built a GPS/GLONASS receiver about five years ago and since then has provided continuous information about GLONRSS time and its comparison with GPS time. For the last two years VNIIFTRI and some other Soviet time laboratories have used Soviet-built GLONASS navigation receivers for time comparisons. Since June 1991, VNIIFTRI has been operating a GPS time receiver on loan from the BIPM. This offered, for the first time, an opportunity for direct comparison of time...
