Numerous airplane contrails crisscross the English Channel, providing visual proof of how common air travel is. Contrails form when hot, humid jet exhaust is expelled into the cold air at high altitudes, typically more than 8 kilometers (5 miles), above the ground. The exhaust freezes directly into ice crystals, forming thin streaks along the path of the jet. The resulting condensation trails only last a few hours, as can be seen in this <a href="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov"...

This true-color MODIS image shows a phytoplankton bloom, indicated by the blue-green swirls, off the coast of Brittany, France. At the top of the image is the southern edge of England, and to its south is the English Channel. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 6/4/01.

The bright blue water west of the English Channel in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image is probably a bloom of coccolithophores, single-celled marine plants with white calcium carbonate shells. The white shells, combined with the blue reflectance of the water, tint the water bright blue. The color could also be caused by other phytoplankton, microscopic marine...

A large, low-pressure system swept across the United Kingdom on Monday, spawning at least three tornadoes there before continuing on toward Scandanavia. This image, acquired on October 30, by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS), shows the storm after it brought torrential rain and hurricane-strength winds to Britain in perhaps the worst storm to hit the country since 1987. High seas nearing 23 feet (7 meters) and winds gusting up to 109 mph wreaked havoc on sea traffic, causing...

The Isles of Scilly, an archipelago of approximately 150 islands, are located some 44 kilometers southwest of the westernmost point of England (Land's End). The islands are an eroded remnant of granite rock that intruded into the Earth's crust from deeper underground. They have been inhabited for over 4,000 years, and historical and geological evidence on the Isles indicates that many of the islands were larger and/or connected in the recent past. Local subsidence (sinking) or rising sea level...

As the basis of the marine foodchain, phytoplankton are important indicators of change in the oceans. These marine flora also extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for use in photosynthesis, and play an important role in global climate. Phytoplankton blooms that occur near the surface are readily visible from space, enabling a global estimation of the presence of chlorophyll and other pigments. There are more than 5,000 different species of phytoplankton however, and it is not always...
