Dextran metabolism was evaluated in euvolemic and hemorrhaged rabbits following administration of a 7.5%NaCl/6% Dextran-70 (HSD) solution. Control rabbits and those bled 8 ml/kg body weight were infused i.v. with 4 ml/kg of HSD or HSD containing C-Dextran-70. Blood samples were withdrawn prior to and at times up to 96 hr after HSD infusion. Peak serum dextran concentrations were about 29% higher in hemorrhaged rabbits than in controls, yet serum dextran t1/2 was similar in both groups....

Two important functions of blood are represented by the ability of red cells to reversibly bind and transport oxygen to the tissues and the ability of plasma proteins to maintain oncotic pressure. Because blood is a limited and valuable resource and has a relatively short storage life, several investigators have been attracted for many years to the development and evaluation of oxygen-carrying resuscitation solutions which could fulfill the functions of blood when administered for...

The acute oral toxicity of physostigmine salicylate was determined in male and female Hartley guinea pigs using the single dose method. The median lethal dose for both male and female guinea pigs was less than 7.1 mg/kg. Clinical signs observed were primarily related to changes in behavior; such as tremors, hypertonia, irritability, ataxia, and inactivity. Other frequently observed clinical signs included salivation, diarrhea, and lacrimation. The duration of the clinical signs was acute. Most...

Apparatus was constructed for the study of pursuit tracking in rhesus monkeys. Two rhesus were trained to track successfully a target moving at 5 milliradians (mrad) per sec (0.29 deg per sec) with an accuracy of + or - 7.5 mrad (0.43 deg) for 20 sec. For one monkey, vision was occluded for 1, 2, or 3 sec during a tracking trial. Tracking continued within 7.5 mrad from 0.48 to 3.24 sec. Additional keywords: visual motor tracking; vision blocking; vision occlusion. (Author).

In this study, we have observed striated rootlets in rhesus monkey rods and cones. 1,25(OH)2D3 increases cell permeability to calcium. This increase is not mediated by proteins sensitive to cycloheximide or actinomycin D inhibition. We propose that CaBP may associate with intracellular membranes and organelles to prevent intracellular calcium accumulation and the potential cytotoxic effects of such accumulation. In support of this hypothesis, the amount of mitochondrial mineralization in chick intestinal cells was markedly increased by 1,25(OH)2D3 treatment when CaBP...
