Magnesium aluminate spinel was tested in a water environment at room temperature to establish its slow crack-growth behavior. Ring specimens with artificial flaws on the outside surface were loaded hydraulically on the inside surface. The time to failure was measured. Various precracking techniques were evaluated and multiple precracks were used to minimize the scatter in the static fatigue tests. Statistical analysis techniques were developed to determine the strength and crack velocities for...

The Martian surface environment provides peculiar challenges for the operation of solar arrays: low temperature, solar flux with a significant scattered component that varies in intensity and spectrum with the amount of suspended atmospheric dust, and the possibility of performance loss due to dust deposition on the array surface. This paper presents theoretical analyses of solar cell performance on the surface of Mars and measurements of cells under Martian conditions.

Low resolution International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectroscopic observations of two magnetic white dwarfs BPM25114 and K813-14 were obtained using both the SWP and LWP cameras. The first object has an observed magnetic field of 4 x 10(7) Gauss and the second has one of 3 x 10(7) Gauss. Both objects have overall spectral energy distributions appropriate for cool DA white dwarfs with T(eff) near 10,000 K and accordingly show strong lambda lambda 1400 and 1600 absorption in their spectra....

Investigations were established for the purpose of analyzing the conditioned media from human embryonic kidney cell subpopulations separated in space by electrophoresis. This data is based on the experiments performed on STS-8 on the continuous flow electrophoresis system. The primary biological activity that was analyzed was plasminogen activator activity, but some assays for erythropoeitin and human granulocyte colony stimulating activity were also performed. It is concluded that a battery of...

This thesis presents the historical development of Government Patent policy with respect to the rights to inventions arising from Federally-funded research and development contracts. Following World War II, the steadily increasing Government investment in R&D activities focused national attention on the controversial issue of patent rights. Several decades of debate notwithstanding, no uniform Government patent policy exists today. the 1980 amendments to the U.S. patent and trademark laws...

Information is presented on the most important features of atmospheric radiation such as the quantitative characteristics of molecular absorption and scattering, spectral and angular distributions, and the three-dimensional structure of shortwave and longwave radiation fields. The model of the structure and composition of the atmosphere is described, and the fundamental optical characteristics of absorption and scattering of radiation by the atmosphere are examined. The principles are studied...

The conditions in which hydrochloric acid aerosol is predicted by the interaction of hydrogen chloride gas with the water vapor in humid air are analyzed. The liquid gas phase equilibrium for the HCL-H2O system is expressed in terms of relative humidity and hydrogen chloride concentration as parts per million, units commonly used in pollution studies. Presented are the concentration (wt ) of HC1 in the aerosol and the concentration of aerosol (ppm) predicted.
