Since 1992, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has been annually hosting the Text Retrieval Conference (TREC). One of the newest tracks, which started in 2011, is the Microblog Track which uses a well-known social network site, Twitter, as its source of microblog data. Twitter allows its users to post 140 character length tweets to share messages with their followers, posting personal updates, and share major media stories from around the world. In order to evaluate...

Vehicle analysis models of any kind have their basis in some type of physical representation of the design domain. Rather than describing three-dimensional continua of a collection of components as is done in detail-level CAD models, an architecture-level abstraction describes fundamental function and arrangement, while capturing just enough physical detail to be used as the basis for a meaningful design space representation and eventually, analyses that permit architecture assessment. The...

In this paper we provide an overview of the Webis group's two-phase approach to the TREC 2010 Sessions track. In a preprocessing phase the queries are segmented to highlight contained concepts. In the final retrieval phase we treat Carnegie Mellon's ClueWeb search engine as a black box and apply the MAXIMUM QUERY framework.

We introduce two heterogeneous query expansion techniques, and a combined system to the TREC 2012 Medical Track. Our methods are based on external resources that provide expansion concepts related to the query terms, by means of the PageRank algorithm, and simple rules based on UMLS Semantic Types. In this paper we show that our systems are able to reach competitive performances at both the TREC-2011 and TREC-2012 tasks.

We report our system and experiments in TREC 2012 microblog Ad-hoc task. Our goal is to return most relevant tweets to satisfy user's information needs which are represented by short keyword queries. In additional to the last year's temporal approach, we used Wikipedia pages to detect concepts of each query. And based on the concepts we detected, we did query expansion and concepts weighting separately. Both methods showed improvements comparing to baseline.

In this paper, we describe the search system, developed at Ghent University for the TREC 2012 Microblog Track in order to rank Twitter messages or tweet from a fixed corpus in response to a number of search requests. Our system ranks the tweets based on a Logistic Regression classifier trained with data from the Microblog Track 2011. The features used for training the classifier include local tweets features, but also, query expansion and tweet expansion features, based on external Web data,...

Advanced ceramics and ceramic matrix composites play an increasingly important role in complex systems for structural, electronic, magnetic, and optical applications. This trend is expected to continue along with a specific goal to tailor composites that display spatial resolution in the micrometer and nanometer range. The fabrication techniques being used range from consolidation of submicron-sized powders to vapor phase deposition. The objective of this symposium was to review the progress...

InfoLab at the University of Delaware participated in the TREC 2012 Medical Records Track. This paper explains our method and describes experiment results. One limitation of existing keyword matching based retrieval functions is the problem of vocabulary mismatch. To overcome this limitation, we propose to first map topics and visits to bags of concepts using domain thesaurus, and then model the relevance based on the similarities between those concepts.

This paper describes our approach to real-time ad hoc task processing in the TREC 2012 Microblog track. The approach uses two-stage relevance feedback to model search interests and temporal dynamics on a microblog. The first relevance feedback uses a single user-selected tweet as feedback. The second approach uses time-based query expansion method leveraging the temporal property derived from the real-time feature on microblogging services. The experimentally obtained results demonstrate that...

This paper describes an approach for obtaining very realistic movement paths through a terrain set by applying the properties of a fluid simulation to produce intuitively human-like results. Similar to the concepts described in the physical world by the Principle of Least Action, realistic paths for human movement generally tend to follow natural lines of drift. This common military term describes a method of route selection based on least effort expenditure (or highest possible speed) enroute...

This paper describes the PKUTM participation in the TREC 2010 Blog Track. We only concentrated on the Faceted Blog Distillation Task this year. Our system adopts a two-stage approach for this task. In the first stage, our system makes use of an IR platform - indri to obtain the top N ad-hoc topic-relevant blog posts for each query. In the second stage, different models are designed to identify the facet inclination. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our approach.

The goal of the entity track is to perform entity-oriented search tasks on the World Wide Web. Many user information needs would be better answered by specific entities instead of just any type of documents. The track defines entities as typed search results, things, represented by their homepages on the web. Searching for entities thus corresponds to ranking these homepages. The track thereby investigates a problem quite similar to the QA list task. In this pilot year, we limited the track's...

Interference can drive a receiver's front-end amplifier into compression - distorting, masking, and/or compressing weaker signals of interest - and interferer frequencies can vary with time. Recently, distributed-element absorptive bandstop, or notch, filters have been demonstrated that can selectively eliminate such interference using lossy (i.e., small and inexpensive) circuit components. These filters maintain excellent characteristics, even when tuned over broad frequency ranges. To extend...

This document contains a description of experiments for the 2008 Relevance Feedback track. We experiment with different amounts of feedback, including negative relevance feedback. Feedback is implemented using massive weighted query expansion. Parsimonious query expansion using only relevant documents and Jelinek-Mercer smoothing performs best on this relevance feedback track dataset. Additional blind feedback gives better results, except when the blind feedback set is of the same size as the...

Current anonymous communication systems make a trade-off between weak anonymity among many nodes via onion routing, and strong anonymity among few nodes, via DC-nets. We develop novel techniques in Dissent a practical group anonymity system, to increase by over two orders of magnitude the scalability of strong traffic analysis resistant approaches. Dissent derives its scalability from a client/server architecture, in which many unreliable clients depend on a smaller and more robust, but...

We introduce a new exemplar-based inpainting algorithm that represents the region to be inpainted as a sparse linear combination of example blocks, extracted from the image being inpainted or an external training image set. This method is conceptually simple, being computed by minimization of a simple functional, and avoids the complexity of correctly ordering the filling in of missing regions of other exemplar-based methods. Initial performance comparisons on small inpainting regions indicate...

We describe the participation of the University of Amsterdam's ILPS group in the blog track at TREC 2009. We focus on the top stories identification task, and take an approach that does not require the headlines of top stories to be known beforehand. We explore the feasibility of a so-called blogs to news approach: given a date and a set of blog posts, identify the main topics for that date. This approach is more general than just finding top stories, but it can still be applied to the task of...

The Common Simulation Framework (CSF) facilitates live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) simulation of a complete missile deployment system. It includes some support for real-time operation but not enough to allow hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) testing. This project added realtime monitoring capabilities to CSF and demonstrated its use for a HWIL simulation. The demonstration involved driving a motion simulator table at the Redstone Technical Test Center in Huntsville, AL. The project successfully...

This paper describes our joint participation in the TREC 2012 KBA task. The system is broken down as follows : first name variations of the entity topics are searched then documents containing at least one of them are retrieved. Finally documents go through two classifiers to categorize them as garbage, neutrals, relevant or centrals. This system got good results (3rd of 11) however first analyses tends to show that ranking is just a little bit better than random.

Live Tor network experiments are difficult due to Tor's distributed nature and the privacy requirements of its client base. Alternative experimentation approaches such as simulation and emulation, must make choices about how to model various aspects of the Internet and Tor that are not possible or not desirable to duplicate or implement directly. We have investigated the growth of ZnO nanowires on curved BaTi03 retroreflector beads, as well as grov.1h of ZnO nanowires on flat substrates. Results indicate that the growth of ZnO aligned nanowire arrays occurs farther away from the Zn source in the retroreflectors, while the results are opposite for the flat Si substrates. In the case of the ZnO nanowires on flat Si, the nanowires formed in nearly aligned arrays are short and significantly thicker, suggesting that the growth occurs both...
