An evaluation of the School Readiness Program is presented in detail. Each of four objectives is examined: (1) To provide effective teaching-learning settings; (2) To determine and alleviate health problems; (3) To develop language skills; and (4) To develop Spanish language skills for children in bilingual centers. The accomplishments of the program are noted and recommendations for further development are listed. (SBT)

In response to the fact that technical standards for screening and placement tests must be more rigorous than those for readiness tests, the predictive validity of the Gesell School Readiness Tests (GSRT) was examined. The purpose of the GSRT, a commonly used screening instrument, is the assessment of children's developmental behaviors to aid in placement decisions for young children. However, typical use of the Gesell test differs from most screening procedures in that it is not followed by a...

In 1985, Virginia state law was amended to change the birth date for automatic eligibility for kindergarten from December 31 to September 30. The law allowed school districts to admit young children with birthdays from October 1 through December 31, provided the children were tested for kindergarten readiness. Testing for admission to school for children with December birthdays began in the fall of 1986. The law specified that children with November birthdays would be added in 1987 and children...

The Cognitive Skills Assessment Battery (CSAB) measures student readiness to begin first grade. It is the assessment used by South Carolina to measure the readiness of each student and to plan an appropriate program for each child. In fall 1998, 81.2% of the first graders (43,568 of 53,640 students) met the readiness standard for South Carolina (a score of 88), a larger percentage than scored ready the preceding year. The percentage of first graders meeting the standard has increased 9.3...

The determination of when a child is ready to enter kindergarten or first grade varies from school district to school district. Currently, many school systems are reevaluating their criteria for school entry. In some school systems, chronological age appears to be the sole criterion; in others, social and learning readiness are also primary considerations. Frequently, educators turn to various testing procedures in order to make an objective determination of readiness. The 113 entries contained...
