Fun top for making cool patterns using a standard hexagonal wooden pencil. Before you print out the top body, print out the sizing template! This should fit onto the pencil, hopefully with a little bit of friction. Due to differences in printers and pencils, this may or may not fit your pencil well, so save time and start with the sizing template. If it's too tight, scale the part up in your slicer and retry. If it's too loose but not too bad, you can use some tape or something to hold it in...

I saw a spinning top on Thingiverse that was made to enclose a coin. I realized a much more effective flywheel could be made from a large flat washer, and also that it didn't actually need to be enclosed, so this is where my tinkering led me. I experimented with a few different shapes for the bottom of it, and this is the one that spins the longest. Small enough to carry every day. You can try printing this right-side-up or upside down. Use support. Print with 98-100% infill. Use a lot of shells (If you pick 15 or so shell layers, it will be all shell). Press a 1/8 inch steel or ceramic bearing into the tip (buy them on eBay or Amazon). It will snap into place. I get spins over two minutes.

I got a a lot of 12mm ball bearings really cheap off ebay a couple of months ago, for a project where I really only needed a few really. So what do you do with 90+ steel balls? Lots of spinning tops. This is version 2.0, which works really well and prints pretty fast. Ball insertion, no pun inteded here, can be a little tricky. If you warm up the print, it's a little easier to get them positioned correctly. Have fun, and share your makes!

This is a Lin Black Bulky Bobbin for spinning wheels in an easily printable, modular format. The front end is a single piece and has a small insert for the bobbin core. Hello, another spinning top. The spinning top is brought up to speed with a cord and runs for 2 min or more. There are 2 handles. One with 2 ball bearings (12x8x3.5mm) or without. Due to the high speed and the resulting temperatures, I recommend the handle with ball bearings. It is best to print the spinning top with 100% filling so that the weight is a little higher.

陀螺 is an inexpensive wood toy that we grew up with and there're similar spinning tops all over the world. I can't buy one here, so I want to build one for my kids to learn.
