You have landed in a clearing. Frantically, you rush through the woods toward the lights of the city far off in the distance. A vision of your family dances in your head -- your wife and the newborn daughter you have not yet seen. You must save them. As you finally scramble to a bluff panoramically overlooking the city, you see the lights in the sky and you realize it is too late. The flash nearly blinds you, and when vision returns, you feel nothing but...

Ship commanders and pilots make life or death decisions based on the information they have at their disposal at the instant a decision is made. One component of that information is whether a radar contact is an enemy or a friend. Various systems exist which try to answer that question based on the characteristics of signals emitted or scattered from the contact. The goal is to maximize the accuracy of identification in order to build trust that when the system tells the operator the contact is...

Radar imaging is an area of tremendous interest as radar-based systems are perhaps the only all-weather, long range remote sensing systems. However, radar's continued utility and application in wide-ranging areas is fundamentally dependent on the ability to produce high-quality, artifact-free imagery. To date, the use of radar to identify and image moving objects remains of great interest. It is well known that motion in the scene gives rise to mispositioning or streaking when target motion is...

Targets that move in the image of 2-D framing sensors are detected with less sensitivity than stationary ones. The reduction in sensitivity occurs when the object streaks during a frame s exposure time. Detection schemes that utilize photon uncorrupted coordinates (on imager) and arrival times can potentially outperform those that pixelate photon coordinates and bin arrival times by frame. Photon counting imager (PCI) technology, e.g. Los Alamos National Laboratory s Remote Ultra Low Light...

Introduction: Indolizine (INDO) is a bicyclic heteroaromatic compound containing two fused rings (10 pi-electron system); pyridine and pyrrole via bridging N-atom at the centre of both the rings. This scaffold exists very rarely in nature and is an isomeric form of indole. It is analogous of indole (isoelectrically resembles indole system) which has marked potency in the biological activity. The scaffold is also related to the heterocyclic compound purine which is the base of cellular...

We present an unsupervised algorithm for detection of moving targets in highly dynamic scenes. These are scenes whose background is subject to stochastic motion, due to the presence of multiple moving objects (crowds), water, trees swaying in the wind, etc. The algorithm is inspired by biological vision. Target detection is posed as a problem of center-surround saliency, which aims to identify the locations of the visual field of maximal contrast with the background. Contrast is defined in...

The physical properties of a supersaturated binary solution such as its density rho, shear viscosity eta, and solute mass diffusivity D are dependent on the solute concentration c: rho = rho(c), eta = eta(c), and D = D(c). The diffusion boundary layer equations related to crystal growth from solution are derived for the case of natural convection with a solution density, a shear viscosity, and a solute diffusivity that are all depen- dent on solute concentration. The solution of these equations...

It has been known for over a decade that certain high-altitude regions on Venus exhibit bizarre radar-scattering and radiothermal-emission behavior. For example, observed values for normal-incidence power reflection coefficients in these areas can exceed 0.5; enhanced back scatter in some mountainous areas in the Magellan SAR images creates a bright surface with the appearance of snow; and reduced thermal emission in the anomalous areas makes the surface there appear hundreds of degrees cooler...

The release of excessive anthropogenic nitrogen contributes to global climate change, biodiversity loss, and the degradation of ecosystem services. Despite being an urgent global problem, the excess nitrogen is not governed globally. This paper considers possible governance options for dealing with excessive nitrogen through target setting, which is an approach commonly adopted to address global environmental problems. The articulation of the nitrogen problem and the numerous international...

Corynebacterium diphtheriae is Gram-positive bacteria responsible for causing diphtheria in human and once regarded for high mortalities worldwide. The fatality gradually decreased with improved living standards and further alleviated when many immunization programs were introduced. Public infectious diseases have positively been controlled by vaccination, yet, the importance of vaccination usually remained unnoticed for the adults. Many of the under-development vaccines are directed towards...

Over the last decade, green growth policies have drawn increasing interest. OECD, UNEP, the World Bank and the EC have had several initiatives on the issue, and the Nordic countries have a special program on it. Definitions and indicator sets have been developed, though critics have pointed out that most initiatives amount to little more than a greenwashing of conventional economic growth. The paper proposes and discusses two definitions of green growth, one weak and one strong. Both build on...

MMSE (minimum mean-square error) target sample estimation using non-orthogonal basis functions is applied to objectimaging with SAS/multi-aspect data. Theoretical and simulation results are impressive: Accurate images from echoes atthree aspects, without a significant increase in SNR. The MMSE process creates images with new features that can beapplied to image-based compensation of receiver rotation/location measurement errors. The simulation, however, indicatesthat a weighted sum of current...

In the present effort, we have built a new and improved model for the prediction of target acquisition. It is based on the latest models of early vision processes in the human visual system. It is a multi-channel model, based on three color opponent channels, and two temporal channels. Each channel is further subdivided into a set of multi-resolution channels. Computations are based on contrast ratio. Local energy values for these dimensionless contrast images are computed, and normalized by...

In principle, formal methods offer many advantages for aerospace software development: they can help to achieve ultra-high reliability, and they can be used to provide evidence of the reliability claims which can then be subjected to external scrutiny. However, despite years of research and many advances in the underlying formalisms of specification, semantics, and logic, formal methods are not much used in practice. In our opinion this is related to three major shortcomings. First, the...

The standard base is a little wobbly for my purpose, so I made an extension to give it a little more weight and stability in all directions. Simply pop the standard base in after you put it together, and if you need to take it apart later, just slide it off. It's meant to be a snug fit, I didn't have to do any modifications to the plastic after it printed and it fits fine for me. Thanks to the original designer for the great reactive targets!

This study analyzes passive and active microwave measurements during the 2003 Wakasa Bay field experiment for understanding of the electromagnetic characteristics of frozen hydrometeors at millimeter-wave frequencies. Based on these understandings, parameterizations of the electromagnetic scattering properties of snow at millimeter-wave frequencies are developed and applied to the hydrometeor profiles obtained by airborne radar measurements. Calculated brightness temperatures and radar...

Localization of moving ground targets using acoustic signals obtained by a passive sensor network, made up of acoustic sensor arrays on the ground is a difficult problem as the signals are contaminated by wind noise and hampered by road conditions and multipath, etc., and are generally not deterministic. It becomes even more challenging when some of the vehicles are wheeled (e.g., cars) and some are tracked (e.g., tanks), and are closely spaced. In such cases the stronger acoustic signals from...

Maneuver tracking is complicated because radar cannot directly measure target acceleration. Radar measures a target's range and bearing, and its radial velocity with respect to radar position. Tracking algorithms use radial velocity to associate radar reports to tracks, but not to update track state estimates. In this paper, a new statistic of centripetal acceleration based on the radial velocity measurement is developed. A tracker using this statistic is developed and tested via simulation...
