“I’ve been going a long time now.
Along the way I’ve learned some
things. You have to make the good
times yourself, take the little times
and make them into big times and
save the times that are all right for
the ones that aren’t so good.’’

Minnie Fay (Carol Klinefelter) and Mrs. Irene Molloy (Mary Beth Benson) take
inventory at the millinery shop while Cornelius Hackl (Leo Ambre) explains to
Barnaby Tucker (Mike Melyon) that “there’s a lot of world out there.” Dolly
Levi (Nora Ginther) encourages the romance of Ermengarde (Claudia Evans)
with Ambrose Kemper (Mark Simaga).
1971 SPRING MUSICAL
The Harmonia Gardens Restaurant scene epitomized the
high degree of professionalism achieved by both the cast
and crew in the 1971 Spring Musical, ‘‘Hello Dolly.” Directed
and produced by Charles Breckle and choreagraphed by
Phyllis Peyrot, the musical was the result of long hours of
hard work and practice. As the play opens, Horace Van-
dergelder engages matchmaker Dolly Levi to find him a suit¬
able second wife. As a result of Dolly’s meddling efforts, Van-
dergelder’s two clerks, Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker
and two millineresses, Mrs. Irne Molloy and Minnie Fay, real¬
ize that "it only takes a moment to be loved a whole life
long.” As the play closes, Horace realizes his love for Dolly
and she becomes the second Mrs. Vandergelder.
Frank Kish, production manager, Jim Broton, stage man¬
ager, and Mike Dominic, lighting director, aided in making
the play a success.

“We’ve Only Just Begun,” the 1971 Junior-Senior Prom, com¬
menced with the couples arriving at the Sheraton in Chicago.
The evening's activities were organized by General Chairman
Barb LaMere, Prom Advisor Mr. Stephen Hronec, and members
of the Junior class. In the Grand Ballroom, couples danced to
the romantic music of Bob Wilson. Dinner preceded the crown¬
ing of Queen Alexis Menke and King Randy McCambridge. The
World Column, at Post Prom, altered the atmosphere with their
modern music. For the couples involved, Prom was a unique
and memorable occasion.
1971 GRADUATION
Commencement excercises became a time of past remem¬
brances and anticipation of the future and for four hundred
thirty-three graduates of the class of ’71 this was no exception.
The graduation ceremonies began with the concelebration of the
traditional Baccalaureate Mass by Bishop Andrew G. Grutka and
Noll’s religious faculty. This mass also marked the awarding of
seventy-two scholarships to outstanding members of Noll’s Sen¬
ior Class. On Monday, May 31, Valedictorian Gregory Ta-
bacznski, speaking for the entire Senior Class, recalled his mem¬
ories of Noll for “without memories we become people without
roots, without ideals, and without realities to fall back on.” Then
Bishop Grutka concluded the ceremonies by conferring the
diplomas.
Valedictorian Greg Tabaczynski expresses the feelings and future hopes of the
graduating class of 1971. Joseph Laciak, Salutatorian, sums up what Bishop Noll
means to him- “.. . the people here that I love.” Graduates George Artim, Luci
Ardelean, and John Ancich wait in anticipation for their coveted diploma.
Graduates, families, and friends assemble for commencement exercises.
32
Patricia Byers receives her diploma congratulations from Bishop
Andrew G. Grutka. Students make final preparations for
commencement exercises. Patricia Michele receives welcome
assistance during the excitement of graduation. Patricia
McGowen, Claudia Evans, and Marcia Keilman mingle joys and
sorrows at the thought of graduating and leaving BNI.
HOMECOMING
The 1971 Homecoming festivities began with the traditional
parade through the streets of East Chicago on Thursday, Oc¬
tober 21. Following the parade, Noll students and boosters
gathered in the fieldhouse for a pep rally, which featured the
senior skit, “Pickleman Goes West.” The next day students
took time out from school work to support their team at a
cheering session during seventh period. That night the Bish¬
op Noll Warriors suffered a disappointing loss to Lew Wall¬
ace. The festivities culminated Saturday night with the Home¬
coming Dance. The Noll cafeteria was decorated to fit this
year’s Hawaiian theme, “Ho’Okipa Mai.” The music was pro¬
vided by “Sircus.” General Chairman for the Homecoming
events was senior Debbie Lauer.
Senior Randy Martinez breaks through for a Noll victory.
King Hornet, John Crist, performs with fellow Hornets in
the senior skit, "Pickleman Goes West.” Enthusiastic
seniors assemble their first place float.

FALL COMEDY
Noel Coward’s, “Blithe Spirit,” directed by Mr. Joseph Mal-
czak and Miss Marilyn Popovich, depicts the life of Charles
Condomine (John Daly) and his vain attempts to analyze the
psychic powers of Madame Arcati (Diane Irk). Through her
efforts, Mr. Condomine’s first wife, Elvira (Marilynne Hennes),
who had previously ‘‘passed over” returns to taunt his
present wife, Ruth (Cara Torhan). Also witnessing this
strange phenomenom were Dr. and Mrs. Bradman (Garrette
Cope and Charlotte Gibson) and the Condomines’ naive and
innocent maid, Edith (Chris Jayjack).
Helen Manich and Dean Neidenthal acted as student direc¬
tors. Technical assistants were Mike Dominik, Frank Kish,
and Maria Hand.
40
Snow King Randy Martinez and Queen Sandy Wins reign over
the Toy Factory, while Russell Podowski and Marion Sowa
display their dancing abilities. Couples enjoy the slower music.
WINTER FORMAL
“Babes in Toyland” was the theme of Winter Formal 1971.
The success of this event was attributed to the many who
worked under the direction of Bob Hanrahan, General Chair¬
man. Through the efforts of Nancy Koharko and Roberta
Sroka, Decorations Co-chairmen, the BNI cafeteria was
transformed into the story-book "Toy Factory,” where Santa
appeared to distribute bids. Couples danced to the music of
"Shades of Time.” The highlight of the evening was the
crowning of Snow King, Randy Martinez, and Snow Queen,
Sandy Wins.
MARDI GRAS
Scenes from “The Wonderful World of Charlie Brown,"
along with a mobile of the Peanuts Characters, provided the
decorations for the B.N.I. Mardi Gras, held on March Fourth
and Fifth. This year's Mardi Gras, co-sponsored by the Mis¬
sion Club and Student Council, supplied two days of fun,
food and prizes for everyone at the carnival. Sixteen bands
performed all week-end hoping to take first place in the
“Battle of the Bands” contest. Booths such as the Ball and
Chain, Moon Walk, Snoopy’s Casino, 1950's Soda Shoppe,
the jail, the American Food booth and the Car Smash com¬
peted for the titles of Best Decorated, Most Profitable, and
Most Original.
TURNABOUT
“A Space in Time,” this year’s Turnabout Dance, trans¬
formed the BNI cafeteria into a world of fluorescent moons,
stars, suns and zodiac signs. The dance is sponsored by the
BNI Service Club with the assistance of Mrs. Mary Michiel-
sen, Service Club moderator and the dance general co¬
chairwomen, Terri Cera and Jane Chovanec. “Courage” pro¬
vided the music for the evening. Crowning of the 1972
"Sweetheart Queen,” Terri Cera, highlighted the evening.
The Turnabout Dance gives girls a chance to treat their fa¬
vorite guys to an evening out.
Paulette Sasser and her escort discuss their horoscope
compatibility. Turnabout couples relax and enjoy the
concert style of music provided by "Courage." Couples
begin the evening by picking up their bids at the dance
entrance.
1972 SPRING MUSICAL
“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” is a musical adapt¬
ation of the “Peanuts” comic strip. The scenes portray the
frustrating life of a five year old boy, who never seems to do
anything right. The role of Charlie Brown went to junior Kevin
Tilka while senior Nancy Koharko played crabby Lucy Van-
Pelt. The gang also included Leo Ambre as Snoopy, Jim Bro-
ton, in his first role as Schroeder, Dean Niedenthal as Linus,
and Maureen Mulholland as Peppermint Patty. Reverend
Jack Winterlin, director was assisted by Miss Marilyn Popov¬
ich and student Dianne Irk. Mrs. Mary Krick was choreog¬
rapher.
Nancy Koharko convinces Kevin Tilka that he is the "singular, remarkable
unique, Charlie Brown.” Jim Broton seriously practices Beethovens
Moonlight Sonata. The Peanuts gang crowns Kevin Tilka “king" as they
reassure him that "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown."

1972 PROM
The Regency Hyatt House, in Chicago, hosted the 1972
BNI Prom, “Colour My World.” Representatives from the ho¬
tel greeted couples as they arrived, and lead them on a tour
of the hotel. The couples, after a ride on the glass elevators,
proceeded to the ballroom where they dined and danced to
the music of Shades of Time and Stone Ground Kelly. The
crowning of Nancy Backus and Lupe Solis as Prom Queen
and King highlighted the evening.

1972 GRADUATION
Four hundred graduates ended their four years at Noll by a
series of events. Baccalaureate mass was concelebrated on
Wednesday, May 24 by the four senior religion teachers, in¬
cluding the senior class sponsor, Father Zivich. Later that
night the traditional senior class dance was held. While “Cir¬
cus” provided the music, the senior paper, which included
the class titles, prophesies and wills, was given out. Larry
Wielgos and Sue O’Brien were named Mr. and Miss Institute
for their service to Noll during the past four years. Finally, on
Monday, May 29th, commencement exercises were held in
the fieldhouse. Valedictorian Joan Gilbert and Salutatorian
Harolyn Coleman addressed the graduates and their guests.
Bishop Andrew G. Grutka spoke to the graduates and
awarded the diplomas.

STUDENT COUNCIL
The primary function of the 1971-72 Student Council was
to form a bridge between the administration, faculty, and stu¬
dents. Student Council re-established the discipline, student
welfare, campus and recruiting committees in order to in¬
volve more students at Noll. Bi-monthly meetings also
allowed every student a chance to express his opinion on
school functions.
Under the direction of Student Council's co-sponsors, Fa¬
ther Pat Connolly and Sister Geraldine, students sponsored
Leadership Day, Homecoming, Winter Formal, and several
sock hops. Student members also assisted Mission Club with
the annual Mardi Gras.
Student Council President Jim Etter. Another Student
Council sponsored activity was the Homecoming Dance.
Student Council Treasurer Sue O'Brien.

CHORAL
One of the outstanding talent groups at Noll is the Bishop
Noll choral group, under the direction of Father John Winter-
lin. Stressing voice development, the students sang a variety
of songs ranging from Bach to Bacharach, including classi¬
cal, rock, and numbers from popular Broadway musicals.
Some of the favorite selections were songs from Jesus
Christ, Superstar.
The choral groups—Freshmen, Sophomore, Mixed, and
Nollaires—presented Fall and Christmas concerts, as well as
singing for the Golden Anniversary Mass. Highlighting the
year was a concert trip to Canada, financed by the selling of
candy.
Bob Hanrahan listens intently to singing instructions.
Nollaires add a special touch of Christmas spirit to the

SERVICE CLUB
Junior and Senior girls willing to volunteer service for
school activities and banquets make up the Bishop Noll Ser¬
vice Club. The members are selected from all interested
sophomore girls on teacher recommendation.
Under the direction of Mrs. Mary Michielsen, the girls as¬
sisted at many of the school’s social functions. Serving
sports banquets and ushering for the Incoming Freshman
Program are part of the normal Service Club duties. Bishop
Noll’s fiftieth year celebration offered members the added
chance to serve at the Golden Anniversary Mass, and a din¬
ner-dance.
The annual Turnabout Dance, sponsored in March by the
Service Club, was “A Space in Time”. The event was coordi¬
nated by General Co-Chairmen Terri Cera and Jane Chova-
nec.

PUBLICATIONS
The annual literary magazine, The Beginning, sponsored
by Mr. Ron Mutzbauer, gave imaginative students a chance
to express themselves. The Beginning included essays, poet¬
ry, short stories, art work, and photographs.
The JourNoll’s main objective this year was to inform stu¬
dents of all school activities. Through the use of sports, opin¬
ion, feature articles, and a few special columns, including
“Teacher Feature" and "Speaking of Sports," the JourNoll
accomplished its purpose with a bi-weekly issue.
The News Bureau, made up of junior and senior Journal¬
ism students, gave outsiders the chance to learn about in¬
side activities at Noll.
Members of The Beginning staff: JoEllen Mistarz, Jann Grabski, Carol

VARSITY CLUB
AND CHEERLEADERS
Athletes who have earned a letter in any one of the eight
varsity sports merits membership in the Varsity Club. The
main purpose of the club is to promote participation in all
athletic activities. With the help of Mr. Bob Bradtke, club
moderator, the N-men sponsored a Basketball Homecoming
dance after the Noll victory over Chesterton. Aside from
regular duties, which included ushering at pep rallies and
basketball games and monitoring during lunch hours, they
also sold basketball, swimming, and wrestling booster pens
to the student body.

thusiasm of sports fans throughout the 1971-72 year. Led by
captain Judy Luberda, the varsity cheerleaders Robbin Bar¬
rera, Maureen Mulholland, Diane Skurka, Roberta Sroka, and
Sandy Wins, supported the teams with cheers such as "War¬
riors Mighty," and "Warriors got the power.” Rigorous prac¬
tice sessions, summer camp attendance, and overall dedica¬
tion helped to keep school spirit going. Supporting the jun¬
ior-varsity teams were Therese LaMere, Alanna Purcell, and
Patti Sember. This year’s freshmen were backed by Judy Ar-

200 lb. CLUB
AND G.A.A.
The 200 lb. Club is a relatively new organization that re¬
quires each member to bench or military press 200 lbs. (one
repetition) in addition to maintaining a "C” average, partici¬
pating in a sport and the weight program, and having a good
disciplinary record. Although the club is open to ail classes,
it functions as a symbol of outstanding achievement. Coach
John Bobalik, moderator of the club, proclaims, “Being in¬
volved in a sport, or extracurricular activity says something
about the quality of the person involved; being a member of
the 200 lb. Club says a little bit more!”
The purpose of the Girl’s Athletic Association is to give
girls an opportunity to display their athletic abilities and prac¬
tice good sportsmanship. Members compete with other area
high schools in sports such as volleyball, softball, basketball,
and tumbling. The sponsor, Miss Sheila Kelly, added track
and tennis to the athletic program this year.
G.A.A. officers: Sue Higgins, Secretary-Treasurer, Ramsey MacLeod, Vice-President, Miss

BOOSTER AND
PEP CLUBS
This year’s Booster Club, sponsored by Mrs. Barbara Pol¬
len, offered junior and senior girls a chance to express their
school spirit in an organized form. Meetings and practices
were held every Wednesday morning in the fieldhouse. With
the traditional blue and gold vests, letter formations and
hand motions were coordinated to the cheers. This year the
members of the Booster Club also sponsored a pumpkin-car¬
ving party after the Noll-Columbus football game.
With the help of Mrs. Garnette Kockler, this year’s Soph¬
omore Pep Club promoted school spirit by attending the Jun¬
ior Varsity basketball games. Their outfits consisted of blue
and gold N's.

BAND AND POM PONS
The BNI Band, under the direction of Mr. P. James La-
Mantia, performed at many activities including winter and
spring concerts, area parades and pep rallies. Drum major¬
ette, Kathy Webb led the band. Band president Leo Ambre,
Vice-President Stormy Palauski and Secretary Mary Francis
Gilbert led the sixty member band to regional and state-wide
recognition in contests and parades. The band, accom¬
panied by the choral group performed in Canada this spring.
In its second year, the B.N.I. Pom-Pon squad directed by
Miss Terri Bigheart, gave half-time shows at football and bas¬
ketball games and marched in city parades. The squad con¬
sisted of thirty-one members who attended a summer camp
to perfect their dance routine, which resulted in a second
place award at the Northwest Indiana Invitational Pom-Pon
contest.

The purpose of the Human Relations Club is to bridge the
gap between different ethnic groups and confront the every¬
day problems that students face. The organization annually
sponsors a student exchange program and Human Relations
Day with other schools in the area.
The Hi-Y Club is affiliated with the YMCA and serves as a
fraternity where members are formally initiated. Members
vote on two club sweethearts to reign at their annual dance

MISSION CLUB AND
STAGE CREW
Mission Club’s main goal was to help the needy people in
the Calumet area. Weekly collections and raffles were held,
along with food drives during the holiday seasons. Under the
direction of Father Mosko, moderator, and Larry Wielgos,
President, the annual Mardi Gras was sponsored.
Even before the cast of a play is selected, students inter¬
ested in “behind the scene work” begin their jobs. Stage
crew members spend many long hours building props and
other necessary items that make a high school play seem
highly professional. Jim Broton, stage manager, Mike Domi-
nik, lighting director, and Frank Kish, production manager,
were three major co-ordinators of stage crew activities.

basis of scholarship, character, leadership and service to the
school. Under the direction of Sister M. Imelda, the club
sponsors the Folk Festival and Talent Show.
The purpose of the National Business Honor Society is to
promote business interest. In order to attain membership in
this organization, an upperclassman must maintain a B aver¬
age and have taken at least three business courses during
the year. NBHS is co-sponsored by Mrs. Pihulic and Sr. Ro-
sita.
Outstanding achievement in journalism entitles a student
to membership in the honorary organization of Quill and

MATH CLUBS
AMATEUR RADIO CLUB
The math clubs are comprised of students whose interests
lie in applying mathematics to activities outside of the class¬
room. The main function of the Sophomore Math Club, spon¬
sored by Mr. Queyquep, is the organization of an invitational
Math Tournament for area eighth grade students. The mem¬
bers of the Junior-Senior Math Club, with the aid of their fac¬
ulty advisor, Sister Imelda, serve as judges for this annual
tourney.
The Noll Amateur Radio Club, sponsored by Father Hen¬
dricks, encourages students to further their interests in ham
radio operation. At Christmas time members transmit mes¬
sages to soldiers in Viet Nam.

1971 BASEBALL
Playing the longest schedule in the school’s history,
the BNI baseball team finished the season with a respect¬
able season of 22 wins, 17 losses, and 1 tie game. At one
point, the Warriors were 17-5-1, but fatigue and injuries
to key players set the team back. One of their main as¬
sets was that many of the players filled two or three posi¬
tions. Eric Wilk led the team with a .397 batting average,
and Joe Laciak led in hits (27) and stolen bases (21).
Senior pitcher Randy McCambridge fired his way
through 67 strikeouts, while Junior Bob Ispas finished
the season with a 4-1 record and a 1.08 ERA. The JV
team wound up its season by capturing nine out of its
last ten games. With nine returning lettermen and prom¬
ising reserves, the Warriors could be the team to beat
next season.

CROSS COUNTRY
After a slow start, the 1971 Cross Country team re¬
bounded and proved to be the best in the school’s his¬
tory. Led by Bruce Bittner, Tony Klusas, and Tom Vahey,
the Warriors culminated a fine record of 91 wins and 19
losses thus qualifying for the state finals. En route to
their fourteenth place finish in the state, the Warriors
placed fourth in the sectionals and third in the regionals.
Other victories included the Hammond City Title (Noll's
first), and an upset of Highland, a perennial state power.
Outstanding individuals on the team included Julian
Brown, Mark Bittner, Jim Hohenberger, Tom Nies, Jim
Burczak, and Clifford Hughes.

FOOTBALL
Injuries, inexperience, and lack of size in both the off¬
ensive and defensive lines resulted in what could be called a
“disappointing” 4-6 record for the 1971 Warrior Football
team. However, first year coach Gerald Vlasic’s team was im¬
pressive in victories over E. C. Washington, Hammond Clark,
Lowell and a narrow loss to a state ranked Hammond Morton
team in a hard fought game. The team’s quarterbacking
duties were shared by Senior Eric Wilk (also an all-state de¬
fensive back) and Junior Mike Karaffa. The Warriors pos¬
sessed fine receivers in Bob Peppers, Kevin Gatlin, and
Frank Podkul. The running attack centered around Senior Al
Dowell, who led the Calumet Region in rushing with over
1,000 yards that included a school record of 278 yards
against Clark. With 14 returning lettermen, including tri-cap¬
tains John Mojzik, Tony Rea, and Bob Peppers, the 1972
squad should have the size and experience to once again re¬
turn the winning to Bishop Noll.

SWIMMING
Faced with massive injuries to a majority of swimmers, the
1972 Swimming Team finished a respective season with a 6
win, 7 loss dual meet record. Senior Co-Captains Mike Reilly
and George Fitzpatrick led the team. Standouts also included
Doug Kamradt, John Burczak, Bob Wilson, Pat O’Neill, Harry
Dolinski, Tom Hauter, Jim Bogusz, Jim Brown, Scott Kam¬
radt, Bob Peppers, Dan Hoffman, and Freshman Mark Vol-
kman. Sectional standouts were Doug Kamradt, capturing
the 1st place awards for the 100 yd. Backstroke and 50 yd.
Freestyle; Pat O’Neill, winning the 400 yd. Freestyle; and
Mike Reilly, placing 2nd in the 200 yd. Freestyle. Noll placed
2nd in Sectionals and captured 8th place in the State. Down-
state competition resulted in a 4th place in the 100 yd.

WRESTLING
The Noll Wrestlers again proved this year to be one of the
toughest teams in the region. Completing a 10-2 meet
record, the grapplers only losses were to LaPorte and pow¬
erful Highland. Sectionals were a disappointment, as no one
advanced in competition.
To no one's surprise Captain Lupe Solis closed out a
brilliant career at Noll by winning the Most Valuable Wrestler
Award. Bob Murphy with 12 pins, was honored as the wres¬
tler who had the most pins this season. Other awards went to
Pat Halton and Dave Stodola, co-recipients of the Most Im¬
proved Wrestler Award. The newly formed Tom Ramker Me¬
morial Award was presented to Senior Lee Sredzinski, honor¬
ing the wrestler who has shown superior achievement not
only in wrestling but also in academics.

BASKETBALL
After a disastrous first half-season which found the Warrior
basketball team with a 1-9 record, Coach Bradtke made a
number of changes including the decision of a definite start¬
ing lineup, a slow-down offense, and a zone press defense.
These changes, coupled with overall improved team play, re¬
sulted in a 6-4 record for the second half which included vic¬
tories over E. C. Washington and Highland and two heart¬
breaking losses to Valparaiso and Gary Roosevelt. Major
contributors to the second half success were Sophomore
Tom Ispas (Most Valuable Player and 9.8 points per game);
Seniors Jim Twarek (11.8) and Randy Ferko (7.7); and Jun¬
iors Tom Karlowicz (9.1) and Harry Powell (6.0); while co¬
captains Tim Porsche and Mark Lissy, along with Frank Pod-
kul and Ed Joyce (Most Improved), provided the team with a
strong bench. With four of the five starters returning, next
year’s team should continue the success experienced in the
second half of the '72 season.

1972 TRACK
Noll’s 1972 track team experienced many surprises and
disappointments in compiling a 27-8-1 record. The highlights
of the season included a first place in the Clark Relays and a
good showing in the Noll Relays. The team was seriously
hampered by the loss of key sprinters and middle distance
men. However, Seniors Keith Clinton (pole volt) and Kevin
Gatlin (hurdles) qualified for regionals and school records
were set by Juniors Tony Klusas in the 880, Julian Brown in
the two mile, Senior Pat Knight in the high jump, and the
relay team of Tim Quinn, John Ross, Cliff Hughes, and Kevin
Gatlin. Other strong performers included Seniors Bruce Bit¬
tner, Tom Nies, Jim McHale, Jim Hohenberger, Ric Horn;
Juniors Paul Bublis, Lenny Ostrowski, Robert Budny; Soph¬
omore Jim Burczak.

1972 BASEBALL
Playing perhaps the most demanding schedule in the re¬
gion, the 1972 Baseball team wound up its season with a
record of 27-10-1. Included in the victory column were wins
over Hammond Morton, Merrillville, and Illinois power Lane
Tech. Leading the team in hitting were juniors Gerry Kray
(.343), Bob Madryk (.310), and senior Eric Wilk (.327). Others
displaying productive seasons at the plate were seniors John
Matusik (.293), Ed Rysiewicz (.286), Frank Podkul (.295), and
junior John Mojzik (.316). Gerry Kray led the team with 32
runs batted in, and Eric Wilk stole 24 bases in as many tries.
Top hurlers for Noll this year were Jeff Moldrawski (9-0), Bob
Ispas (6-3), and Frank Moricz (4-1). The finale of the season
came as the team won the Hammond Sectional title, but fin¬
ished second in Regionals after a close loss to Hammond
Morton.

BUSINESS EDUCATION
The Business Department, headed by Mrs. Pihulic and Sis¬
ter M. Rosita, provided the business students with the neces¬
sary courses needed for a position in the business world.
Students interested in secretarial fields are offered courses
in typing, shorthand, clerical practice, and business machin¬
es. Other courses offered are: Business Management, Busi¬
ness Law, Retailing, Business Mathematics, and Consumer
Economics.
Each year, junior and senior business students, who have
shown exceptional effort in their courses, are inducted into
the National Business Honor Society.

ENGLISH AND
FOREIGN LANGUAGES
Under the direction of Mr. James St. Amour, Bishop Noll's
English department has devised a four-year program in liter¬
ary appreciation, writing development, and related language
and study skills. These goals are being accomplished
through daily English classes, plus courses in speech, com¬
position, and communication arts designed to meet the fu¬
ture needs of the students.
Through the efforts of the Language department, headed
by Miss Karol Karaffa, BNI students participated in a program
in which they learned the language, customs, literature, his¬
tory, and philosophy of a foreign country. To emphasize the
importance of communicating in a foreign language, tapes,
records, and language labs are employed.

FINE ARTS
The Fine Arts Department, headed by Father Winterlin,
provides an excellent opportunity for students in many fields
of fine arts. The art curriculum includes basic design, crafts,
print-making, ceramics, drawing, painting and sculpture. Di¬
rected by Mr. P. James La Mantia, the BNI band provides
music for numerous school activities, including football and
basketball games, parades, concerts and musicals. In choral
classes fundamental music theory is taught in addition to
vocal skills. Choral students, along with the Nollaires, present
three concerts annually. This year, the band and mixed chor¬
al sold candy to finance a trip to Canada.
117
HOME ARTS
Chairman Sister Marjorie directs the Home Arts Depart¬
ment in teaching students the basic skills needed in home-
care. The Clothing Division offers knitting, crocheting and
basic sewing methods, along with an insight of textile and
fashion industries. In the Foods Division, nutrition and meal
planning are taught, with the emphasis on food preparation.
In addition to hearing daily lectures about these fundamental
skills, students practice the arts through lab work, which en¬
ables the students to apply the procedures they learn in the
classroom.
119
MATHEMATICS
The Bishop Noll Mathematics Department prepares stu¬
dents for college and the business world. Courses such as
Geometric Algebra, Algebra and Trigonometry, Business
Math, Calculus and Computer Programming strive to stimu¬
late the student interest in these fields. By the use of over¬
head projectors and three-dimensional equipment, the con¬
cepts of mathematics are made easier for students to grasp.
Under the direction of Sister M. Imelda, department head,
teachers stress practical application of class learning.
Sophomore Mel Abascal notes important algebraic definations. Mark
McLaughlin diagrams a car engine.
121
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The Physical Education Department, headed by Mr. Bill
Archer and Miss Sheila Kelly, works to develop the physical
strength of the students through swimming, volleyball, soft-
ball, soccer, basketball and tumbling. Students are divided
into teams where the basic rules and regulations for each
sport played are taught. Good sportsmanship and teamwork
are emphasized. Acquired speed, smooth coordination and
fundamental skills of modern athletic sports are some of the
objectives of physical education.
Diving, a major part of the swimming program,
stresses form as well as coordination.
Calisthenics serve physical education students
as a body toner and as an all-over conditioner.
Tom Hauter develops stamina through
swimming.
Senior Dan Berrones reviews the U.S. system of electing a president. Father Gaza's
junior religion class outlines the value of social laws. Government students listen to a
guest speaker's views concerning social security. Sophomore religion class aids Tim
Sweeney and Alex Williams in understanding the modern mass.
RELIGION AND
SOCIAL STUDIES
The responsibility of preparing young people for Christian maturity
falls on the Religion Department of Bishop Noll. Father Rugabber,
head of the Religion Department, says that the goal of the religion
classes is “not creating theologians, but followers of Christ.”
Although the field of Social Studies is often considered by many
students as a factual study of events and places, Bishop Noll tries to
present it in a different manner. The essence of social studies, ac¬
cording to Mr. Timothy Hyland, Social Studies Department head, is
“man’s relation with man and his environment.”
Julius Lentz and Denise Kozlowski enjoy a lighter moment in Contemporary Problems. Freshmen
discover that notetaking is an important aspect in World Cultures.
125
SCIENCE
Under the direction of Mr. Walter Pikul, the Bishop Noll
Science Department gives students an introduction to the
basic concepts of science. Sophomores studying biology are
taught important facts about living things, varying from bac¬
teria cultures to man. Chemistry is designed to help the stu¬
dents see how chemical principles and concepts are devel¬
oped from observation and data. Seniors study the relation¬
ships between forces and motions of an object in the physics
course. All science students find that laboratory periods give
them an opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in
experimentation.

This year has been for me what could be called
an experience in living. This book is an expression
of that ‘living’ experience of the people at Noll.
We’ve tried to present Bishop Noll as people
relating to and with people.
To all of the staff, my friends, and my family, I
say thank-you with much love. “I never could have
done it without you.”
I’ve lots of memories left to hug to myself in
future years. Thanks for being a part of them.
Co-editor-in-chief
As co-editor of the ’72 Marquette, I have learned
and experienced many things which have left me
with my own memories. However, I have tried to
present the past year as it was to the students. All
of you can judge the book and come to your own
conclusions as to how well the staff and I have
done. For thcfee of you who might be dissatisfied, I
can only say that we did try. And for those of you
who did like the book, I hope it brought back mem¬
ories of this particular year. To this year’s staff, I
want to extend my sincerest gratitude and appre¬
ciation for their hard work and helpfullness
throughout the year.
Finally, I would like to wish the best of luck to
the 1973 staff in their production of the Marquette.
