PREFACE.
+-
*The present volume of the Catalogue of Greek Coins forms part
of the series describing the money of Philip and Alexander, and
, of the successors of Alexander, a series which properly follows
the civic coinage of Macedon. The volume of Macedon and the
volumes describing these regal coinages are being simultaneously
drawn up, and that of the Seleucida.e being first completed is
now published. It has been prepared under my direction by Mr.
Percy Gardner of the Department of Coins and Medals.

INTRODUCTION.
(«) Arrangement.
As the classification of the Coins of the Kings of Syria presents
n%nqjous difficulties, and as the present volume proposes several
new attributions, it has been judged desirable to begin the
Catalogue with a slight summary of the reasons for the classifi¬
cation of* the various series now adopted.
Such summary must necessarily be imperfect, as the Catalogue
is limited to the Collection at the British Museum. All other coins,
however rare and interesting, are passed by in the body of the
work, and can only be mentioned in this introduction in passing,
when they throw light on the question of attribution.
There are seven distinct series, the arrangement of which is
sufficiently difficult to require a brief dissertation :—
I. Silver of Antiochus I.-III.
II. Silver and Copper of Seleucus I.-IV.
III. Copper of Antiochus I.-III.
IV. Coins struck by Antiochus III. in Greece.

VII. Copper of last Antiocbi.

INTRODUCTION.
Ix Silver of Antiochus I.-III.
During the period which elapsed between the accession of ther
first of these monarchs and the death of the last,, five princes named.
Antiochus actually ruled over Syria. For Antiochus Hierax held,
during many years a practically undisputed sway in Asia Minor, in
no way acknowledging the authority of his brother Seleucus II.,
with whom indeed he was constantly at war. That he should have
allowed the money of his brother to be issued or pass current ip
his dominions is not for a moment to be believed; that he issued
no money at all, is equally incredible • we have therefore every
reason to expect to find his coins not among the least numerous
of those of the Seleucid princes. Also we know, from an inscription,
found at Seleucia on the Orontes, that a young prince* occupied’,
the throne for a short period between the death of Seleucus III.
and the accession of Antiochus III. This prince issued coins, as ‘
we shall presently find, under the name of Antiochus. «
We have good testimony for the fact that Antiochus I. assumed,
towards the end of his reign, the title Sotert, which he won by a'
victory over the Gauls. This enables us to identify his coins, for'
we have pieces with the legend XflTHPoZ! ANTIoXoY, and
hearing on the obverse the head of an elderly monarch with pinched
features, .sharp nose, and deep-set eyes (PI. hi. 7). The same
head appears on coins with the legend BAZIAEQX ANTIoXoY
(PI. iik 5 * 6 ); and a similar head, younger, but with theusame cast
of features and general aspect, on a large quantity of coins (PI. ni.
8, 4). All this class may be set apart as issued by Antiochus I.,
and its separation is made easy by the remarkable deep sinking

of tlie king’s eye, which is unmistakable. Finally, this younger
head, with long straight nose and very deep eye, is found on certain
pieces hearing, Herakles seated as reverse type (PI. in. 2). 'These
seem, to be the earliest coins of Antiochus I., and were probably
issued during his father’s life, when with Stratonice as a bride
he received as a kingdom all Asia beyond the Euphrates. On
inheriting his father’s dominions he would seem to have substituted
Apollo for Herakles, copying closely the type already adopted by
Nicocles king of Paphos,* and used by Seleucus on copper coin.f
It was in the reign of Antiochus II. that the provinces of Parthia
and Bactria revolted against Seleucid rule, the latter under Diodotus
and Euthydemus, the former under Arsaces. All of these revolted
princes struck coins. The type adopted by Arsaces was a warrior
seated on the Delphic omphalos of Apollo, and holding in out-
st^ched hand a bow. The type used by Euthydemus was Herakles
seated on rocks, holding in his r. hand a club. Now the originals
of both of these types, Herakles seated, and Apollo on his omphalos
holding out a bow, occur on pieces struck, as the legend shows, by
a king named Antiochus, and bearing on the obverse the same
head (PI, v. 8—5). This head resembles that of Antiochus I. in some
respects, especially in the deep setting of the eye. It is also not
Unlike the portrait of Demetrius Poliorcetes, who was the maternal
grandfather of Antiochus II. These seem to be valid reasons for
assigning to Antiochus II. the two above-mentioned sets of coins.
And with them will go, of course, other pieces, which have the
same portrait on the obverse, and on the reverse Apolltf holding
arrow and bow as on the coins of Antiochus I. (PI. v. 1). The
type used by the revolted Diodotus is Zeus thundering to 1., holding
the aegis over his 1. arm. It is remarkable that the same type

INTRODUCTION.
occurs on coins which bear the name of Antiochus, and which must
needs have been issued under authority of Antiochus II. (PI. v. 7).
But it is noteworthy that the portrait on these pieces is very different
from that on the already-mentioned coins of Antiochus; it is, in
fact, absolutely identical with the head on Diodotus’ coins, which we
have every reason to suppose to be that of Diodotus himself. These
coins then, with the portrait of Diodotus and the name of Antiochus,
were probably issued immediately before Diodotus’ revolt, and repre¬
sent the time when he was doing his best to supplant his master
in the eyes of the people.
That Antiochus Hierax must have issued abundant coin is
certain; nevertheless it is a matter of some difficulty to separate
with probability his pieces from those of Antiochus III. But
there is a large class of coins strongly resembling one another, and
bearing a portrait closely like that of Seleucus II., the brother.of
Antiochus Hierax, which may very well have been issued by the
latter prince (PI. vii. 1-5). That they were not minted by Anti¬
ochus the Great is rendered probable by the fact that the border
on them is formed in every case of dots, and never of a continuous
filjet, as is usual in his coins, which fillet almost certainly did not
come into fashion before the death of £eleucus III., on whose
coins, the attribution of which is fairly certain, there is no in¬
stance of its use. The style of work also is better here. Nor
does the ^portrait at all resemble that which appears on the ascertained
coins of Antiochus III. These reasons seem sufficient to justify
us in giving, at least provisionally, the whole class to Hierax.
That between the death of Seleucus III. and the* accession of
Antiochus III., a prince named Antiochus reigned for a short time,
is known from the testimony of the above-mentioned inscription of
Seleucia.* That .this prince was a youthful son of Seleucus is by

far most probable, for none but a son of bis deceased brother could
have intervened between the able and ambitious Antiochus III. and
the throne. As, however, Seleucus died at the age of less than twenty-
three" this son must have been quite a young child, not more than six
years old. Now we have a set of coins with the name of Antiochus,
and bearing the. portrait of a child of about that age (PL vn. 1, 2),
a portrait more childish than that of Antiochus V., who was during
his reign 9-11 years old (PI. xni. 11-14), and even than that of
Antiochus VI., who was about 6-8 years of age (PI. xix.). It is
impossible to accept Sestini’s attribution of these pieces to Anti¬
ochus III., who was some twenty years old when he began to reign ;
and as the period of their issue is fairly certain, they must belong to
the young son of Seleucus III.
The coins of Antiochus the Great are very numerous, and present
ns* with great variety, as indeed might have been expected from
the length of his reign and the extent of his dominions. To separate
them from the money of his successors is easy, the portraits of all
subsequent Antiochi being quite ascertained. Among his prede¬
cessors, Hierax alone issued coins which may be confused with his.
The standard portrait of Antiochus III. is given us by dated coins
of Phoenicia (PI. ix. 8). ' The same head or one not strikingly dis¬
similar is found on a quantity of coins with that peculiar border
called the fillet border, which was not used by Seleucus III. or his
predecessors, but was used by the young Antiochus, his son, and by
subsequent kings. Such coins have sometimes as type an # elephant
(PI. ix. 1, 2), sometimes Apollo seated on the omphalos (PI. vin. 7).
The portrait on them is, I think, always of the same king, although
there is much variety; that this portrait is of Antiochus III. is for
the above reasons certain, and I think undisputed.
This same portrait does, however, appear on many pieces which
have the ordinary dotted border (PI. vin. 8-5), and which were
doubtless also issued by Antiochus III. The difficulty is that
c
Xviii INTRODUCTION.
there are some coins with dotted border bearing a head almost
as closely resembling that of Hierax as that of Antiochus the Great;
in fact, between tie two (p. 26). These are mostly^ of somewhat
barbarous work and small pretensions to exact portraiture. I have
given them rather to Antiochus III. because of the length of his
reign, and the magnitude alike of his dominions and his expeditions :
but it must be understood that it is not possible to draw a hard
and fast line in the matter.
II. Silver and Copper of Seleucus I.-IY.
The silver of the first four kings bearing the name of Seleucus
presents no great difficulty to the arranger. The portrait of
Seleucus I., when it appears on his coins, is either helmeted or
homed* and bears marks so evident of belonging to the age of
Alexander as to leave no doubt in its attribution. This king issued,
silver coin without his portrait, probably quite ' in the early part
of his reign. The likeness of Seleucus II. is fixed for us by his
bearded portrait, the name Pogon being applied to him by the
historian Polybius* (PI. vi. 14). The reverse type of the Bilver
coins hearing this portrait is a standing Apollo, and a standing Apollo
appearing on the reverse of some other coins issued by a Seleucus
who is represented as unbearded (PI. vi. 1, 2), we naturally examine
this unbearded portrait to see if the head be the same asi^tlie bearded
head. The result of such a scrutiny is to satisfy one of the identity
of the two portraits, the bearded being taken somewhat later in life.
The portrait of Seleucus IV. is given us by dated coins.f Only one
portrait of a Seleucus remains: this must needs be of Seleucus III.

(PI.>vm.). It represents a young man of very weak and undecided
character, which is just the character attiibuted .by history to the
prince in question. 1
The attribution of the silver coin being thus certain, and -I think
undisputed, it is easy to classify such of the copper coin as bears
a portrait. This is the case only with several pieces of Seleucus II.
(PI. vi. 3-5). The attribution of the copper coin without portrait
remains to be examined.
* In the earlier part of his reign Seleucus I. issued money of gold
and silver, with the types of Alexander the Great. Closely con¬
nected with these issues are certain copper coins, which must clearly
he given to the same period. The types of these are sometimes
taken from the gold; i.e. on the obverse, head of Pallas, on the
reverse, Nike (Pi. n. 3, 4) ; sometimes from the silver, as in the
case of a remarkable coin which presents, on the obverse', the head
of young Herakles, on the reverse, Apollo seated on the omphalos
(PI. II. 5). This latter coin brings before us for the first time the
reverse type adopted by Seleucus’ son Antiochus as the arms of the
dynasty. Seleucus used the type rarely; but it seems impossible .
m view of the fabric and obverse type of this coin to give it to a later
Seleucus, especially as oh the coin certainly struck by the second
prince of the name, Apollo always stands (PI. VI.).
The remaining coins given to Seleucus I. are attributed partly
on the ground of type, partly on that of fabric. On gold coins
undoubtedly issued by this king, and bearing his portrait, the
reverse type consists of a horse’s head with bull’s horns, and an
anchor (PI. i. 6), We do not know, in the case of the horse’s head, ^
cither the meaning of the type (with certainty) or the special con¬
nection with Seleucus; but as regards the anchor, it is certainly
taken from the device of his signet. These two objects, anchor and
horse’s head, mark out as belonging to Seleucus a quantity of copper
coin on which they appear, apart or together (PI. n. 6-9), in
XX
INTRODUCTION.
connection sometimes with the figure of an elephant (PI. H. 7),
sometimes with the heads of the Dioscuri (PI. n. 8). The elephant
also appears largely on' the silver coin of this king (PI. I. 7-10),
reminding us that he made war on Sandracottus or Chandra Gupta,
an Indian king, and exacted from him, as the price of peace, five
hundred elephants, of which he made excellent use in his subsequent
wars. This seems a good reason of giving also to Seleucus I. the
coins with an elephant’s head for reverse, and on obverse the heads
of the Dioscuri (PI. u. 10), a type which we have already met.
Again, the- type of Nike crowning a trophy belongs, when it occurs
on copper (PI. ii. 11), just as when it occurs on silver (PI. i. 11-13),
•to Seleucus I., and with it goes the kindred representation of Nike
crowning a warrior, which appears on the reverse of pieces, on the
obverse of which is a head of Apollo full faoe (PI. n. 12) : also
very beautiful coins (PI. xxviii. 1) having on the obverse a full-face
head of Dionysus, and on the roverse a warrior, probably Seleucus
himself, spearing a fallen foe. The full-face representations do not
seem to have persisted in this series beyond the middle of the third
century B.c.
There is another type, which, on the analogy of the silver, I
would attribute to Nicator, This is Athene Alkis, who appears on
his silver pieces fighting from a chariot of elephants (PI. i. 7—10).
This type seems to be in a special degree Macedonian,* and is
perhaps peculiar "to those who claimed the Macedonian throne, as
Seleucus did in his later years. On copper coins Athene appears
on foot, sometimes the Seleucid anchor being in the field^ on pieces
the obverse of which bears a somewhat early head of Apollo
(PI. ii. 13).
Thero is yet one type on copper money which I give to Nicator,
although it does not, I think, occur on his coins in precious metal.

INTRODUCTION.
XXI
This is the humped bull, butting. There is a well-known story
that Seleucus, alone and unarmed, stopped a furious bull which
escaped from the altar as Alexander was sacrificing. We may
see ill the coin an allusion to this story, or we may prefer,
regarding rather the Indian type of the bull, to see a reference to
the Indian victories of the King. In any case, style and fabric fully
justify us in placing the copper coin with this reverse here; that is
to say, some of it—all which bears on the obverse a head of Medusa
(f*l. n. 14), and all which has on the obverse an early head of
Apollo, with long streaming hair (PI. n. 15). The variety with
head of Apollo in which the hair is tied in a knot cannot, as we
shall presently see, be placed earlier than Seleucus II. (PI. vi. 10).*
The earlier head appears also on coins, best placed here, which have
on the reverse a tripod (PI. h. 16).
The copper of Seleucus II. which bears his unbearded portrait
and is of undoubted attribution, presents us with three types at
least—(1) Apollo standing, holding arrow and how (PI. vr. 3) ;
.(2) an elephant with driver on neck (PI. vi. 4); (8) a horse sur¬
mounted by the stars of the Dioscuri (PI. vi. 5). Jt also furnishes
us with notions as to the style to be expected, and the monograms
used during his reign. Of the already-mentioned types, two, Apollo
standing (PI. vi. 6) and the Elephant (PI. vi. 8) occur on copper
pieces having on the obverse a head of Pallas in a close-fitting
helmet, a type new to the series, and quite in accord with what we
should expect as to style. The standing Apollo also occurs in con¬
nection with a head of Artemis (PI. vi. 7) and a head of Herakles
(PI. Xxviii, 7). History does not inform us why Seleucus II. should
have specially adopted the Dioscuri as his patron deities, or placed
their effigies on his coins. Nevertheless, considerations of .style,
oombined with the fact that on certain coins of this king we find the
Unmistakable stars of the Dioscuri (PI. vi. 5), justify us in placing
here the coins which bear on the reverse the figures of Castor and
xxii INTRODUCTION.
Pollux, and on the obverse a head of Apollo, the hair gathered in a
I »
knot behind (PL n, 9), as well as those which have the heads of the
Dioscuri on one side and Nike on the other (PI. vi. 11). The same
head of Apollo also appears on a series of pieces which have on the
other side a gibbous bull, either butting (PL vi. 10) or at rest
(Pl. vi. 12, 13), a type already alluded to. This head shows a
revival of the archaic manner of representing Apollo, a revival which
we know to have taken place about the middle of the third century
b.o., at the time when Ptolemy II. was encouraging at Alexandria
every form of the study and love'- of the antique in literature. It
may be added that on one of the pieces which represent a bull
butting we find the same monogram ^ (Pl. vi. 10) which is found
on the certain coins of Seleucus H.
The coins which bear the portrait of Seleucus II. bearded are
unmistakable (Pl. vi. 15, 16).
With Seleucus III. we again find the type of the seated Apollo,
which type, for some reason unknown to us, Callinicus seems to
have avoided, and observe a certain degradation of style. On the
obverse of the pieces having this type we find (1) a head of Apollo
of a peculiar type, and by no means unlike the monarch himself
(Pl. vn. 8); (2) a head of Artemis, of a decidedly ruder style than
that which appears on the coin of Callinicus (PL vn. 10). Besides
these small pieces, I give to Seleucus III. a series of coins which
have on the reverse a tripod, and on the obverse a head of Apollo of
a feminine type (Pl. vn. 9) strikingly similar to that on the money of
Molon, whose reign was but two or three years later (Pl. x. 2).
To Seleucus IV. I attribute a series of coins with serrated edge,
bearing various types (Pl. x. 9-13). That this peculiar fabric was em¬
ployed thus early we are sure, because there exists coin of the King
with serrated edge and the dates A.s. 137, 138* ; but it was apparently

Dot employed by Antiochus HI., and was not introduced in Macedon
and Italy before the middle of the second century b.o. These serrated
. i » 1
coins, therefore, are not likely to have been issued by a previous king.
Nor can they have been issued by a later king. Seleucus V. had a
very brief reign, and we have every reason to suppose that he issued
no coin; in the time of Seleucus VI. the fabric had passed out of
use. We have good reason, then, to attribute them to Seleucus IV.,
and with them go certain pieces with flat and partly serrated edge -
(H. x. 8), having on the obverse an archaistic head of Apollo similar
to that on the fully-serrated coins.
HI. —Copper of Antiochus I.-in., &c.
Our distribution of the copper issued by-the early Antiochi is
greatly facilitated by the fact that Antiochus I. and III. as well as
Hierax placed their portraits on some of their pieces. Nevertheless,
as Antiochi were reigning almost incessantly in Syria during the first
century and a half of Seleucid dominion, we miss in this case those
breaks and intermediate coinages which help us so much in classify¬
ing. Hence there are many coins which cannot be assigned with
strong probability to any one prince. In such cases I have merely
tried to fix their limits of time as narrowly as I could, without
indulging in baseless conjecture.
The clue to the ascertainment of that part of the copper coin of
Antiochus I. which does not bear his effigy is to be found in the wars
w bich he waged against Antigonus Gonatas, during which, though
bistory is almost silent about them, we may be reasonably sure that
■b® laid claim to the throne of Macedon. Traces of such claim
certainly appear on coins which I would attribute to him. Of these
the types are as follows :—(1) Macedonian shield; on the boss,
anchor; Rev., Horned elephant (PI. iv. 7, 8). (2) Head of Zeus;
XXIV
INTRODUCTION.
Rev., Thunderbolt (PI. iv. 14, 15). (3) Head of Apollo.; Rev.,.
Tripod (PI. iv. 17). That all these pieces were issued in one region
and at one time appears alike from the uniformity of the fabric and
from the occurrence throughout the series of the same monograms,
PI and foE, and the same symbols, the club, the bow, and the
jaw-bone of a boar. The fabric appears to be Macedonian; some
of the types are certainly so—for instance, the Macedonian shield,
which is used as a type by the competitors of Antiochus for the
Macedonian throne, Antigonus Gonatas and Pyrrhus. The type of
the horned elephant indicates a period close to that of Seleucus,
whose elephants are also horned, while those of all succeeding kings
are without horns. We have good reasons, then, for supposing the
whole series to have been issued by Antiochus I., possibly in
Europe, certainly while he was an aspirant to the Macedonian
throne. To the same period belong his coins with the type
of Athene Alkis (PI. iv. 9), also quite a Macedonian type.
Further, it is reasonable to give to Antiochus I. the coins which
continue his father Seleucus’ types, such as Nike erecting a trophy
(PI. iv. 10), as well as other pieces which present us with full-face
heads of Apollo or Pallas of a style indicating the earlier part of the
third century ,B.c. (PI. iv. 11-13), and in addition a few coins with
seated Apollo on the reverse and head of Apollo on the obverse
(PI. iv. 16), chiefly in view of the style of the last-mentioned head.
To Antiochus II. I would give a series of coins which bear, on the
obverse, a head of Apollo of a somewhat later type than appears on
the money of the first Antiochus, but with hair streaming, not
rolled, as on the coins of Seleucus II., on the reverse a tripod,
beneath which the Seleucid anchor (PI. v. 8, 9). These pieces are
copied from those (already mentioned) of Antiochus I. (PI. iv. 17).
The attribution to Antiochus Theos must of course remain doubtful;
we might almost as well give them to Hierax, but that they shew
small resemblance to those coins of the latter which bear his por-
INTBODUCTION.
XXV
trait (PI. vii. 4, 5). It would seem that the first two kings of the
Seleucid line issued copper money in such quantities as to do away
with’ the necessity of large issues by their successors; or possibly
these latter used the old dies. It seems almost certain that between
Antiochus I. and III. only Seleucus II. issued plentiful copper
coin. Similarly, at a later period, Philippus, whose silver money
la extremely plentiful, does not seem to have struck at all in
copper.
The copper money of Antiochus m. is in some instances dated,
ft nd usually has his portrait. That portrait wears sometimes the
re gal diadem (PI. rx. 8-8), sometimes the laurel-wreath of Apollo
(PI. IX. 9-11). There are, however, a few pieces without portrait,
which seems to have been issued by him, viz.: (1) Head of Apollo
with formal curls; Rev., Apollo- standing, leaning on tripod
, (PI- ix. 14). (2) Same; Rev., Elephant (PI. ix. 12). (3) Head
°f Apollo, hair rolled; Rev., Elephant (PI. ix. 13). The head of
Apollo of classes (1) and (2) is exactly like that on the coins of
Achaeus, who revolted against Antiochus HI., and was put down
hy him (PI. x. 2). The elephant is a well-known type of Anti¬
ochus III., and no doubt embodies an allusion to his oriental ex¬
peditions. It will be observed that the money of Antiochus III.
which does not bear his portrait is very small; many kings,
ancient and modern, have allowed small change to appear without
their effigy.
The attribution of the coins which have the legend BAXIAEHX
ANTloXoy and a serrated edge is difficult (PI. xni. 9, 10), and
has formerly been despaired of. They do not belong to the first
three Antiochi, for this peculiar fabric was not introduced so early,
n ° r do they belong to Antiochus VI., all of whose numerous coins
hear his portrait, Dionysiac types, and the letters TPY or XTA.
'h'ho question remains between Antiochus IV. or V. and Anti-
ochug VII. Of these two attributions I have preferred the former.

because all the types, (1) Head of Demeter; Rev., Elephant’s
head (PI. xm. 9), (2) Head of Apollo ; Rev., Apollo seated
(PI. xxii. 10), are found on the serrated coins of Seleucus IV.
(PI. x. 10-13), the immediate predecessor of Antiochus IV.; and
because neither type nor fabric corresponds with those of Anti¬
ochus VII. or his contemporaries. Between Antiochus IV. and his
son it is impossible to decide.
IV.— Coins of Antiochus III. struck in Greece.
The attribution to Antiochus III. of the coins described on page
29 (PI. xxviii. 2—4), struck respectively at Carystus and in Aetolia, is
new, and requires a few words of justification. That the two sets
of coins were issued by the same prince appears not merely from the
general similarity of portrait, which is more observable in a piece
published by Dr. Imhoof-Blumer,* and preserved at the Hague, but
also from the peculiar character of the wreath on the king’s head,
which is in both cases intertwined with a diadem. The contem¬
poraries of Antiochus, Attalus I. of Pergamum, and Ptolemy IV.
of Egypt, also wear wreaths, the former of laurel, the latter of ivy,
in each case similarly Intertwined. That the prince who struck
coins at Carystus and in Aetolia was Antiochus III. appears from
historical considerations. Antiochus was in b.o. 192 elected Strat-
egos, or Praetor, of the Aetolian League with absolute powers, and
passed the winter of the same year at ChaTcis in Euboea, where in
honour of his marriage with a Chalcidian lady he held splendid
games, to which we may find allusion in the chariot of the reverse of
the Carystian coin, as well as in the oak-wreath on the head of
Antiochus himself.

V.— Copper of Dehetrius I. II.
The copper pieces of these two princes can be assigned in most
cases on good grounds ; in almost all cases they bear either portrait,
date, or title. The exception is a set of coins with serrated edge,
which may be thus described in order of magnitude :—(1) Head of
Apollo; Rev., Tripod (PI. xxi. 13). (2) Head of Artemis; Rev.,
Bow and quiver (PI. xxi. 14). (3) Horse’s head; Rev., Elephant’s
head (PI. xiv. 15): of these three classes we may at once claim the
last for Demetrius I., as animal types are usual on his coins
(PI. xrv. 12-14), and do not occur on those of Nicator. The other
two classes present us no peculiarity which should enable us to give
them to either prince; they must therefore remain doubtful.
VI.— Copper of Alexander I. II.
There are three classes of coins which bear the name of Alexander,
hut neither a portrait nor a date by which they might be identified.
Of these, two have smooth edge (1) Head of Zeus; Rev., Pallas
standing, in wreath (PI. xvi. 12); (2) Head of young Dionysus ;
Bev., Elephant (PI. xvi. 13). The third has serrated edge. Head of
young Dionysus; Rev., Fortune (PI. xxn. 15). That the first type
belongs to Alexander I. is rendered certain by the occurrence of a
silver coin with an almost exactly similar head of Zeus, which bears
a date in his reign (PI. xvi. 1). The second class bears the mono¬
gram /^i lj which is of constant occurrence on the coins of Alexander I.
The third type is marked by an aplustre, one of the most usual
°f adjuncts on the coins of Alexander Zobina, but scarcely, if ever.

used on those of Alexander Bala. Perhaps, however, it will ho
thought' a violent proceeding to give class (2) to Bala, and class (3)
to Zebina, when both have the same obverse type, the'young head
of Dionysus. - But it should be observed that the two Alexanders
use the same types in many cases, Zebina copying’ Bala; only, on
comparing similar coins of the two series, a great difference of fabric
will be seen, the coin of Zebina being far rougher and of worse
fabric; and this difference exactly will appear in comparing the two
heads of Dionysus before us; that which I suppose to have ap¬
peared under Zebina being ruder and less neat by far.
VII.— Copper of Last Antiochi.
Antiochus XII., called by the historians Dionysus, claimed the
throne of Syria as heir of Grypus, after his brother’s death. He
seems to have ruled for a few years, about b.c. 89-84, and to have
fallen in battle against Aretas, King of Damascus. Antiochus XIII.,
’ called Asiaticus, established himself in a few cities of Syria after
•Tigranes had Been driven from the throne, B.c. 69, but was soon put
down by Pompeius.
Now the title Dionysus, above quoted, as well as the unmistakable
indications of style, point out to us as the coins of Antiochus XII.

KAAAINIKOY (PI. xxvn. 3). So far there is no dispute. But
there are other coins with the same legend, the word AloNYXoY
only being omitted, which some^ would attribute to Asiaticus
(PI. xxvii. 1, 2, 4). There can, however, be little doubt that these

coins also were issued by Dionysus, for three reasons: (1) Through¬
out the Seleucid series it is a custom with the kings to put on
their’ 'coins sometimes more, sometimes fewer, of their titles; in¬
stances would he superfluous; (2) The portrait on the coins with
the word AlONYZoY is very much like that on the coins where
that word is absent; (8) Exactly the same type, Zeus standing,
1S common to the two sets. If Asiaticus issued coins, which is
doubtful, they have not come down to us.
(0) Mints.
•
The assignment of coins of the Seleucidae to mint-cities is a
matter of extreme difficulty in many cases. In the present volume
such assignment has been attempted but seldom, only where it
could be made with great probability. In the case of monograms,
account has been taken of their position in the field or the exergue,
not * es8 than of the elements of which they are formed.
(1) Coins of Phoenicia .—In the mint of Tyre, the well-known
monogram of the city, on a club, was used as a distinguishing
mark; in the mint of Sido'n usually the letters ZIAI2, in conjunc¬
tion either with the aplustre, or with IEP[AZ] AZY[AOY], Both
these mint-marks are unmistakable. For Ascalon we have AZ in
conjunction with the figure of a dove, the bird sacred to Derceto, the
goddess of Ascalon. In one or two cases, following Muller,* I have
Ve ntured, though with much diffidence, to give to Ascalon coins
hearing the letters AZK merely, without accompanying symbol.
'The mint-mark of Berytus is a trident, accompanied on coins both of

INTRODUCTION.
Alexander I. and Demetrius II. by the monogram of obscure
meaning. The monogram I have given to the mint Sycamina,
not universally, but only as occurring in the short space of B.o. 126-
* 112 on coins mostly with Phoenician types minted by Cleopatra,
Antiochus VilL, and Antiochus IX. By the position of the mono-
* gram on the coins it is rendered all but certain that it is intended to
stand for the name of-a city, and the fabric proves that this city was
situate on the,Syrian sea-coast; no such city but Sycamina begins
with the letters J£Y. Also it is recorded that in the year b.c. 103
Ptolemy Lathyrus landed at the port of Sycamina with 30,000 men,
which proves the city to have been of some importance about the
time at which the Syrian coins were struck. The monograms pi
ff|, when they occur on the coins of the Ptolemies, are supposed
to indicate the mint of Ptolemais, the older Ace, and I have accepted
the attribution in describing coins of Antiochus V., Demetrius I.,
and Alexander I.
(2) Corns of Asia Minor .—The earlier Seleucidae struck largely
in the north of Asia Minor, introducing, according to the system
followed ,in the case of coins issued bearing the name of Alexander,'
the type of the mint-city as a symbol or accessory in the field, while
the main type belonged to the King. Thus we find on the money
of Antiochus II. and Hierax (pp. 14, 21) as accessories the torch' 11
of Cyzicus in conjunction in. one case with an eagle, in another
with a half sea-horse. The eagle might seem to indicate Abydos,
the sea-horse tampsacus, and both Lampsacus and Abydos are in the
neighbourhood of Cyzicus, and may have had a monetary convention
with that famous mint. We find on the money of Antiochus II. a
feeding horse in the exergue (p. 14). The fabric being that of the
Troad, this accessory induces us to give the pieces in question to

INTRODUCTION.
XXXI
Alexandria Troas. From the coins with the feeding horse in the
exer gue we must, however, carefully distinguish those, of quite
another fabric, whereon the feeding horse is standing beside the
ODQ phalos of Apollo. The latter set are given by Miiller to Larissa
lQ ‘Via, an attribution which. I shall presently discuss. Again we
on the money of Antiochus III., as accessories two Asiatic
Goddesses with local cult (p. 25), the Athene of Ilium and the Deity
°f Myra, and so are able to class the pieces thus distinguished to the
^o cities mentioned. Once more, it seems reasonable to attribute
to Tarsus all coins bearing as reverse-type the remarkable structure
commonly called the tomb of Sardanapalus (PI. xxi. 6, 7, xxrv. 8,
Xxviii. 8), but far more probably representing the funeral pyre
aunually erected* by the people of Tarsus in honour of the god
Stindon, according to Phoenician tradition and usage.+ This pyre,
Unmistakable in its details, appears on the municipal coins of
rtm s; and it is unlikely that a type so peculiar would occur
elsewhere. To Salamis in Cyprus I have given a coin of Antiochus
■ (P- 111) which seems to interrupt the Ptolemaic series of Cyprus,
aa d bears the symbol there used, the owl.
(3) Corns of Syria and the East. —I have already mentioned a
Mrge class of coins, existing both in silver and copper, whereon a
feeding horse appears standing beside the omphalos on which Apollo
seated (pp. 9—11). These pieces were issued by the earlier
Seleucid kings, and M. Muller claims them for the mint of Larissa
Vial. The reason which prevents me from accepting this attri-
*°u is the following : all the silver and-copper coins of this class
Haoul-Rochette, l’Hercule Assyrien.

in the British Museum, so far as their source can be traced, seem to
have been brought from Media, from the neighbourhood of the city
of Ecbatana. Silver coins are often dug up far fronr their place of
mintage, but copper coins very seldom; whence it appears likely
that the whole class was issued in the far East, perhaps in the
neighbourhood of the Nisaean Plains, where were the huge herds of
horses belonging to the Eastern kings. A coin of’Antiochus VII.,
bearing as type a Uly (PI. xx. 14), I have given to Jerusalem, in
accordance with the conjecture of M. de Saulcy. *
One is very strongly tempted to discover the names of mints in
many of the monograms which occur so constantly on coins of the
Seleucidae. This temptation has to be resisted for several reasons.
If we were quite sure that these monograms contained the names of
cities, yet a monogram is a thing so obscure and bo ambiguous that
we should despair of their tn^e solution. But we are not sure of
this. On the contrary, it is almost certain that the large majority
of monograms, as they do not recur under successive reigns, do not
represent places. Of the minority, which do so recur, some may
probably stand for the names of mints; but the indications they
offer are so slight that the utmost caution is required in interpreting
them. The monogram £ [AIL for instance, often recurs, but it
is impossible to say, if it stand for a city, for which of all the Syrian
cities beginning in the Bame way it stands. With regard to one
group of coins only I have ventured on a set of readings. These
are tetradrachms, minted by Demetrius I., and of a uniform
character.t In the field of them, to the left,‘is invariably the
monogram H occurring io conjunction with ( a | j /{sj, aQ( j a
date. What F3 may signify I know not, but it does not seem
presumptuous to see in the other three monograms the names of
Apamea, Antioch, and Heraclea; of which cities the two former

were two of the most important in Syria; the third was a sea-port of
some size in the neighbourhood of Laodicea ad Mare. These same
monograms, when occurring on other coins of Demetrius and of
Alexander I., I have felt justified in interpreting in the same way;
in particular would seem to have been the recognized abridg¬
ment of the name of Antioch. On the coins of Deipetrius II.
„(pp. 61-2) this monogram*is preceded by M, which probably
stands for the title Metropolis, a title most appropriate to the city
of Antioch. On other coins of Demetrius I. R seems to Btand for
Gaza.
By the letters TPV and XT A, which continually occur on the
coins of Antiochus VI., mints are not signified. - TPY probably
stands for Tryphon, and XT A for Staphylus, a name which Try-
phon may perhaps have assumed as friend and -guardian of the
young Dionysus, borrowing the nam^from the King of Assyria who
received the god at his court.*
