ICEBREAKER

Share a story of a time when you felt weak or helpless. How did it turn out?
In your moments of weakness, what do you do to cope?

INTRO •• 2 CORINTHIANS 1:1-2 (P. 5H2)

Compare this introduction to a few of Paul's other letters. What do you notice?
Does this introduction feel any different to you?

Much of what makes 2 Corinthians interesting is that in this book, we get to see
Paul the person through what he writes. His words are full of doctrine to be sure,
but we also get to see how he personally is dealing with adversity.

COMFORT •• 2 CORINTHIANS 1:3-11

On Sunday, I mentioned seven lessons about hardship from this passage. For
each one, find the place in the text where that lesson is taught. Then, share how
that lesson personally connects with you. Has it been true in your life? Have you
seen it be true in the life of someone else?

1. God deserves praise regardless of my situation.

2. God is compassionate and brings comfort.

3. God comforts me so I can comfort others.

4. Suffering is Christian (we share the sufferings of Christ).

5. Hardship builds reliance.

6. Deliverance yields praise.

7. BONUS: Deliverance builds faith.

This last lesson is not directly mentioned in the text, but it's implied. When I seek
God in my hardship today and when he brings me comfort tomorrow, it's easier to
trust him in the next hardshipI Each pain builds faith in God for the next one!

TAKE IT HOME

Is there a hardship you are facing now? Discuss with the group how that hardship
can deepen your relationship with God.

Discuss with the group how that hardship can be a blessing to others.

If you aren't going through a hardship today, you can answer these questions
about a hardship from your past.

How will this lesson help you prepare for the hardships of the future?
