A Brief History of April Fools’ Day SS O
It's a day for jokes, pranks and making a fool of yourself, also known
as April Noddy Day, Gowkie Day and Gowkin’' Day. Did you ever won-
der how April Fool's Day originated? How did the custom of practical
jokes come about? Historians think it started in the 1500s in Europe
when the French King adopted our currently used Gregorian Calendar.
When the new calendar was adopted, New Year's Day, which was
Originally around the date of April 1, changed to January 1. It's possi-
ble that people forgot the date change and still brought gifts and cel-
ebrated New Year's Day on April 1, thus making them the first ‘fools:
April 1 is also noted in history for the birthplace of the dollar sign,
created by Oliver Pollack, a New Orleans businessman in 1778. Other
notable firsts for April 1 are the first accident insurance policy, print-
ed in Hartford, Connecticut in 1864, and the first treaty between the
Native Americans and colonists in 1621. (source: The Holiday
Handbook by Carol Barkin and Elizabeth James)
